Leilah Babirye: We Have a History
Ugandan-born artist Leilah Babirye creates expressive ceramic and wooden sculptures that celebrate LGBTQ+ identity and reclaim African artistic traditions. Working with both traditional hand-building and firing techniques alongside unconventional materials—bicycle chains, wire, found metals—she transforms discarded objects into powerful portraits that span from intimate talismans to towering totemic forms. This groundbreaking U.S. museum debut explores how personal and cultural identity can be reclaimed through art, bridging historical practices with contemporary queer perspectives to rewrite narratives of her community. On view through May 2026 with rotating works included in general admission.
