O. Smith: Artivist

July 25, 2026 – June 20, 2027

Through powerful graphic narratives created from his cell at San Quentin, Orlando Smith channels decades of artistic practice into a fierce visual critique of mass incarceration and state violence. Known as an "artivist," Smith wields pencil and paper as tools of resistance, documenting the cruelties of the criminal justice system and amplifying the voices of aging prisoners whose paths to freedom remain unjustly blocked. His evolving body of work—from the hundreds of comic characters populating Skullthuggery Comics to recent illustrated journalism exposing prison realities—demonstrates how art becomes activism when driven by unwavering conviction. This exhibition showcases Smith's unflinching aesthetic as a form of witness and advocacy, challenging viewers to confront systemic inequality and imagine more humane futures.
