Museum of the African Diaspora
Beauty Plus
March 18, 2026 – May 31, 2026
Photographer Jasmine Ross captures the poignant final chapter of a beloved Black-owned beauty supply store in New Haven through intimate large-format film photography. Beauty Plus documents three months in the life of the 31-year-old shop and its owner Mel, exploring how these community spaces simultaneously offer empowerment and reflect the complex economics of Black beauty culture. Ross's meditative analog practice honors the often-overlooked contributions of small business owners while examining broader questions about cultural ownership, survival, and the interplay between community care and commercial exploitation.
