O. Smith: Artivist
Orlando Smith, an incarcerated artist at San Quentin, harnesses the power of comics and graphic journalism to expose the injustices of the criminal legal system and demand accountability for abuses of power. Drawing on over four decades of artistic practice—from his early inspirations in Marvel Comics to the creation of nearly seventy graphic novels—Smith channels his creative energy into unflinching visual testimony about prison conditions and the struggles of aging inmates facing indefinite incarceration. This exhibition presents work by an "artivist" whose drawings serve as both personal chronicle and urgent call for reform, reflecting an unwavering commitment to documenting truth, celebrating human dignity, and advocating for systemic change.
